Design Faster With a Stronger Shared System

This customizable workshop helps product design teams use, improve, and scale their design system so they can create more consistent experiences, collaborate more effectively, and move faster across product work.

Workshop Summary

NUMBER OF SESSIONS
2-3 Sessions
SESSION LENGTH
120 Minutes

Design systems help teams move faster, create more consistent experiences, and reduce duplicated design and engineering effort. But in many organizations, the design system exists without being fully adopted, consistently applied, or clearly understood across teams.

Designers may detach components, recreate patterns, or struggle to know when to use what. Product and engineering partners may interpret the system differently. Documentation may exist, but not answer the questions teams actually have in day-to-day product work. This hands-on training helps product and design teams build stronger shared practices around their design system. Through practical examples, collaborative exercises, and team-specific discussion, participants will learn how to use design systems more effectively, identify common breakdowns, and improve collaboration across design, product, and engineering.

Build Better Product Workflows Around Your Design System

YOU WILL LEARN

1
How to use a design system more effectively: Build shared habits for finding, applying, and adapting components and patterns without creating unnecessary one-off work.
2
How to improve consistency across product experiences: Understand how design systems support better visual, interaction, and experience consistency across teams, features, and product surfaces.
3
How to collaborate better across product, design, and engineering: Create clearer expectations around component usage, documentation, handoff, implementation, and shared decision-making.
4
How to evolve the system without slowing the team down: Learn practical approaches for proposing changes, documenting decisions, improving patterns, and keeping the system useful as product needs change.
5
How to prepare your system for faster, AI-enabled workflows: Explore how stronger components, patterns, and documentation can help teams move faster as AI-assisted design, prototyping, and design-to-development workflows become more common.

Learning Outside the (Virtual) Classroom

Deeply ingrained in our programs is the idea that learning happens best when facilitated by real human connection. That’s why we’ve focused on building opportunities for Designlab students to connect with peers, mentors, and others in our community.

Connect, Collaborate & Discuss

At the center of our community is the Designlab Discord server. Here students, alumni, and mentors alike help each other get unstuck on coursework, give career advice, and provide design feedback.

But it’s not all business on Discord. It’s also a place where people discuss wellness practices, share book recommendations, find online video game partners, and talk about their favorite stationary (all real examples).

Learning, Live

Our courses feature live sessions (Group Crits, Peer Sessions, and more) so students can  present work, discuss feedback, and practice integrating the value of active critique into their design work. While the precise format varies by course or program, they all provide the chance for students to interact with peers in a facilitated session.

Real-World Insights: Expert-Led Events & Workshops

Being part of the Designlab community has its benefits. Students, alumni, and mentors receive lifetime access to our full slate of exclusive events and workshops. These online events cover a wide range of topics from navigating the job market to storytelling, user research, the latest design tools, and more.
