Product Strategy: Reintroducing Comments to Netflix

  • This article explores the reintroduction of a comments section for Netflix, suggesting features like time-synced comments, spoiler protection, and profile integration to enhance user engagement.
  • The piece discusses strategies for aligning this feature with Netflix's core goals, focusing on improving content discovery while considering market trends and user behavior to tailor the comment system for positive viewer interactions.
  • “By meticulously analyzing existing user data, conducting surveys, and learning from competitor designs, Netflix can tailor the comment section to user needs and optimize its impact on both user experience and business goals.”

Experimentation + Iteration = Great UX

  • UX pioneer Jakob Nielsen emphasizes the importance of experimentation to achieve high-quality outcomes—and discusses how multiple trials or attempts through quick iterations can often be the way to achieve success.
  • By “taking more shots” and therefore encouraging a culture of experimentation and refinement, UX practitioners can enhance the final quality of their products while learning from past designs to improve future outcomes.
  • “It’s a hard bullet to bite for many elitists such as myself that randomness and multiple attempts are major determinants for superior performance. But much research shows that they are.”

The Future is Built on Solid Foundations

  • Brad Frost, principal design consultant for Big Medium, advocates for the importance of solid foundations in companies and teams in order to successfully adopt and integrate emerging tech such as AI.
  • Frost focuses particularly on design systems for UX teams, emphasizing that having strong, well-established systems allows organizations to be more innovative while still continuing to produce quality products and results.
  • “There’s a “stability vs innovation” dynamic that can sometimes feel like competing tension, but what we’ve found is that stability and innovation are more complementary than competitive.”

💜 PORTFOLIO INSPIRATION

Randon Sommars, a UX Academy graduate, combines his passion for fitness and community in much of his design work. In Korcycle, a focus on user connectivity to find shared routes is coupled with dynamic UI to bring the app to life. In Aube, Sommars redesigns the responsive experience for a pilates studio to create a more streamlined and straightforward user flow for clients.
